*Note: Preview function will not work for this template, you must publish to see it in action.
The side-by-side template will display two stories side by side without the traditional header and allows options for immersive photography. On stories with the side-by-side template in use, there is a navigation menu icon to the left of the publication name in the header. This navigation menu will display which ever menu you have in the Mobile Menu location, and if that location is blank, the side-by-side template navigation menu will display the menu named “Bottom Menu.”
Steps
-
Create a new story, give it a headline, and a featured image. Assign it to a category and change the template to Side-by-Side Container. You don't need to add text to the body of the story if you don't want to, this is simply acting as the container for the two side-by-side stories you're about to add. Save/publish.
-
Create a new story, give it a headline, a featured image if you want, and give it some text. Don't bother assigning it to a category (step 1 took care of this). Change the template to Side-by-Side Chapter and choose the Side-by-Side Container you want it assigned to (from step 1). Choose if you want the story to show up on the left or right. Save/publish.
-
Follow step 2 again to create your second story.
Side-by-Side Container
To use the side-by-side layout for a story, first create a main or container story that will "hold" the two stories you wish to display side-by side. When you create this container story, choose Side-by-Side Container from the Story Page Template section on the right side of the Edit Story page. After checking the box for side-by-side, you will see some extra options for this template. Your container story can have content or can be kept blank and just be used as a container. However it must have a headline, but you can hide it on the story page.
Side-by-Side Chapters
Every Side-by-Side Container needs TWO Side-by-Side Chapters. After you have created the container story, simply add a new story and choose Side-by-Side Chapter from the Story Page Template section on the right side of the Edit Story page. Once this is clicked, you will need to choose which side-by-side containers story it goes with and fill in the other options provided. As with the container story, the rest of the Edit Story page will function normally.
Notes About the Immersive Featured Image:
- You can only have an immersive featured image on the Side-by-Side Container Story.
- The immersive featured image must be horizontal.
- The caption and photographer do not display with the immersive featured image. We recommend adding this information to the body of the story either in the text or by pasting and editing this short code as the first line in the main story box on the Edit Story page: [sidebar title=”Above Photo” align=”right”]This is the caption.[/sidebar]
- The immersive image is much larger than other photos on the site so we recommend a size of 1500 pixels by 1000 pixels.
