*Note: Preview function will not work for this template, you must publish to see it in action.
The long-form template will display stories without the traditional header and allow options for immersive photography and chapters of text. On stories with the long-form template in use, there is a navigation menu icon to the left of the publication name in the header. This navigation menu will display which ever menu you have in the Mobile Menu location, and if that location is blank, the long-form template navigation menu will display the menu named "Bottom Menu".
The long-form template can be designed and customized on the SNO Design Options page at the bottom.
Steps
-
Create a new story, give it a headline, and a featured image. Assign it to a category and change the template from default to Long-Form Container. You don't need to add text to the body of the story if you don't want to, this is simply acting as the container for all the other stories you're about to add. Save it.
-
Create a new story, give it a headline, a featured image if you want, and give it some text. Don't bother assigning it to a category (step 1 took care of this). Change the template from default to Long-Form Chapter and choose the Long-Form Container you want it assigned to (from step 1). Save it.
-
Follow step 2 again and again until you've created all the stories you want to be under that main container from step 1.
Long-Form Container
To use the long-form layout for a story, simply choose Long-Form Container from the Story Page Template section on the right side of the Edit Story page. After checking the box for long-form, you will see a box to enter a shorter headline and the option for making your featured image immersive. If you check this box, your featured image will fill the entire screen above the story’s headline.
Notes About the Immersive Featured Image:
- You can only have an immersive featured image on the Grid Container Story.
- The immersive featured image must be horizontal.
- The caption and photographer do not display with the immersive featured image. We recommend adding this information to the body of the story either in the text or by pasting and editing this short code as the first line in the main story box on the Edit Story page: [sidebar title=”Above Photo” align=”right”]This is the caption.[/sidebar]
- The immersive image is much larger than other photos on the site so we recommend a size of 1500 pixels by 1000 pixels.
Long-Form Chapters
If your story is exceptionally long, or you have different elements that would work well with their own headlines, the Long-Form Chapter option is going to be useful. After you have created the main Long-Form story container, simply add a new story and choose Long-Form Chapter from the Story Page Template section on the right side of the Edit Story page. Once this is clicked, you will need to choose which long-form story container it goes with, choose the chapter’s placement, and write a shorter headline.
Again, you will also have the option for an immersive featured image. As with the main story, the rest of the Edit Story page will function normally; however, it is recommended that you do not pick a category for this chapter. And of course, if the story you are placing on the long-form page is indeed long, it is recommended to make use of embeddable objects, more photos, polls, pull quotes, etc. If you do not want the main headline to display for the new chapter, simply type None into the top headline box. You will still need to provide a shorter headline on the right under Story Page Template, but with “None” in the main headline box, you will not see a headline on the story page. You can have up to 10 chapters per main story.
