There’s a lot more that goes into being an editor than just copy editing. This lesson will examine and explain the different roles required by editors as leaders of the publication. This could be a great mini-lesson for your incoming or aspiring editors, or a review for the entire staff so everyone knows what’s expected from those at the top. While this lesson focuses on roles in addition to copy editing the activity gives editors a chance to practice their copy editing skills.

Edit the story
Read the 500 word story on the worksheet and mark up any AP errors, grammatical errors, spelling errors with the note on what is correct. Identify and factual errors and note them for the reporter to fix. Strikethrough any unnecessary words or sentences within the story to get it down to 300 words. If necessary re-write the story after completing your mark-up.
