In podcasting, because there is no visual component, sound is all you have to convey the facts and emotion of your story to your listeners. While there are traditionally four types of sounds that podcasts incorporate, learning how they play off of one another can help create interesting audio effects that will keep your listeners actively tuned in.

Activity
Listen Up
By paying attention to the sound design that goes into a podcast, a lot can be learned about different audio elements and how they interact. In this activity, students will listen to three student-produced podcasts from Best of SNO, identify the types of sound that are included in them, and acknowledge how the host chose to use each one.
After completing this activity, students should have a better understanding of how narration, natural sounds, and ambient sounds complement each other, and how they each play a different role in helping listeners “see with their ears.”
